An RNLI lifeguard open day is taking place on Boscombe beach over the weekend.
The event on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 June is being hosted by RNLI East Dorset Lifeguard Fundraisers and will give residents and visitors the chance to learn more about the lifeguard service.
People will be able to meet RNLI lifeguards, fundraisers, water safety education volunteers and others involved in helping keep beaches safer during the summer season and throughout the year.
Activities across the 2 days will include children’s games, water safety sessions, videos, lifeguard rescue demonstrations and sand hole collapse demonstrations, with the event taking place beside the lifeguard base on Boscombe beach.
David Richmond-Coggan, Chairman of East Dorset Lifeguards Fundraisers, said the team was “really excited” to be holding the open days for local communities in Poole Bay.
He said the event would help people see “what lies behind the presence of our RNLI lifeguards” on local beaches and mark the 25th anniversary of RNLI lifeguards around the country.
Bournemouth and Poole were among the original RNLI lifeguard pilot locations when the service began in 2001.
Over the past 25 years, RNLI lifeguards in Bournemouth and Poole have saved 188 lives, aided 47,314 people and responded to 45,706 incidents.
With warmer weather expected, the RNLI is urging coastal visitors to choose a lifeguarded beach, swim between the red and yellow flags and call 999 for the Coastguard in an emergency.
