Specialist sixth form places in Poole will double from September for young people with SEND.
Linwood School’s Skills Centre in Parkstone will increase its capacity from 30 to 60, creating 30 additional places for students aged 16 to 19 who have Education, Health and Care Plans.
The expansion will use existing accommodation and provide personalised learning focused on independence, communication, employability and preparation for adulthood, alongside practical activities designed to develop skills for further education, employment and community life.
BCP Council says the decision will allow more young people to receive specialist teaching and support closer to home, while reducing reliance on placements outside Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.
Councillor Richard Burton said the centre would help students “gain independence” and work towards their aspirations, adding that families should know their child can access suitable support without looking further afield.
Executive headteacher Gemma Talbot said the additional places would extend support to more young people and families across the BCP area, helping students build confidence and practical skills for adulthood.
