Plan approved to combine public waste bins

Public litter and dog waste bins across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole will gradually be replaced with combined units.

BCP Council has approved a new waste bin policy that will phase out separate dog waste bins and introduce single units for both litter and dog waste across the area, replacing many ageing bins currently in place.

Around 2,800 bins are currently installed across the three towns, but the council says many are deteriorating and in some cases creating safety issues for residents and staff responsible for emptying them due to their design, size and location.

Under the new plan, larger capacity bins will be used where needed and some locations may see underground bins installed, which offer greater storage and could reduce how often collections are required while allowing technology such as sensors to improve efficiency.

Councillor Sandra Moore said providing more bins in locations where they are used most should help encourage people to dispose of waste correctly, while Councillor Richard Burton suggested signage could help inform residents if bins are moved.

Cabinet members unanimously approved the proposal following discussion.
