The South West has recorded the lowest rate of fly tipping in England for the second year running, with nine incidents per one thousand people, according to new figures from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

The latest statistics covering April 2024 to March 2025 show the region had the fewest incidents nationally. Most fly tipping across the country involves household waste such as furniture, carpets and items from house clearances or small DIY projects.

Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner David Sidwick said he was pleased to see the region leading the way again. He said funding from his office and Dorset Council for a dedicated fly tipping enforcement officer has led to a seventy eight per cent rise in fixed penalty notices for waste crime, adding there is still more to do.

Dorset Council’s Cabinet Member for Place services, Councillor Jon Andrews, said joint work with the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner is helping the council take tougher action. He said eighty fixed penalty notices were issued last year, almost double the previous year, alongside increased fines and vehicle seizures linked to waste crime.
