Bournemouth man convicted of manslaughter

A Bournemouth man has been convicted of manslaughter following a second trial over a town centre stabbing that claimed the life of 18-year-old Cameron Hamilton.

Thomas Betteridge, aged 20 and of Bournemouth, was found guilty of manslaughter and possessing a bladed article in a public place at Bournemouth Crown Court yesterday. The conviction follows a retrial after an earlier manslaughter verdict from March 2024 was overturned on appeal.

Police were alerted to an altercation in The Square at around 1:25am on Saturday 5th August 2023. Officers were on scene within seconds and worked with paramedics, but Cameron Hamilton was pronounced at the scene.

Betteridge was arrested in the town centre that night and charged following an investigation by the Major Crime Investigation Team. He will return to court for sentencing in May.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil Third said, “I hope this conviction offers some comfort to Cameron’s family. Despite their grief, they have continued to campaign to raise awareness of knife crime and have made a real difference locally through their Changes Are Made charity.”

Cameron’s family thanked Dorset Police and the Crown Prosecution Service for their support and asked for privacy.
