Residents return home after Storm Chandra

Residents removed from their homes during Storm Chandra flooding are now able to return at three affected sites.

Intense rainfall during the storm led to rapid rises in river and groundwater levels on already saturated land, with river levels in several locations reaching or exceeding previous recorded highs, prompting evacuations and a significant response across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

BCP Council highways teams worked through Wednesday night responding to one hundred and fifty three reports of flooding on roads, while additional support was provided at Iford Bridge Home Park, including transporting residents, running a rest and reception centre, and arranging overnight security.

People living at Beaulieu Garden Park Home Site, Iford Bridge Home Park and Redhill and Wheatplot Homes Sites have now been advised they can return, with power restored at Iford Bridge and the flood warning for the area no longer in force.

Councillor Andy Hadley said the ground across BCP and surrounding areas “remains very wet”, adding that further rainfall could “exacerbate the current flooding issues” and urging residents to take care, particularly when travelling or walking near water.

Although river levels have fallen, further rain is forecast over the weekend and a yellow Met Office weather warning for rain is expected to apply from midday on Monday, with residents advised to remain cautious.
