Quay hotel plan faces reversal
A plan to redevelop the former Quay Thistle Hotel in Poole is expected to be overturned after the developer failed to complete a required legal agreement.
The western planning committee previously approved the application in August last year, but the permission depended on a section 106 agreement being signed.
The application by MHA Burleigh Poole (Propco) Ltd, which followed public consultation until June last year, proposed five multi-use buildings with commercial units, 179 residential flats, a hotel with a bar and restaurant, underground parking and cycle storage. Councillors approved the scheme on a six to five vote.
Documents show that the section 106 agreement required £655,948 in contributions, including funding for local education improvements, public transport enhancements and offsite open space. The developer did not enter the agreement.
The site has a long planning history. Permission was refused in 2021 for an earlier scheme considered too large for the area, and an appeal in 2022 was dismissed. The hotel closed with immediate effect last year and has remained vacant. Days after the closure the developer went into liquidation.
A report to the committee recommends that the earlier approval is overturned and planning permission refused. The recommendation is due to be considered at a western BCP planning meeting on 4 December.
