BCP backs plant-based policy for cabinet

A new Plant-Based Action Plan has been unanimously approved by BCP Council’s overview and scrutiny committee and will now go to Cabinet on 29 October.

The policy outlines eleven steps to encourage more plant-based eating across council services and local schools. Among the measures are plans to introduce a vegan day, ensure meetings offer at least one vegan option, and require council-run food outlets to serve a minimum of 25 percent plant-based meals.

Major catered events will also need to include at least 10 percent vegan options.

Three vegan champions will be appointed to help deliver the plan, which was first raised by residents during public questions in July last year.

During the meeting on 9 October, councillors agreed to amend the draft document to refer to ‘plant-based’ throughout and to increase the original 20 percent target to 25 percent.

Daniel Glennon from Plant-Based Councils BCP said it was encouraging to see progress in this area but urged the council to be even more ambitious to meet its climate goals.

Alex Harman from the Plant-Based Treaty added that the plan shows real leadership and could help inspire schools, caterers and community groups to make plant-based food more accessible for everyone.
