Youth workers to support teens in A&E pilot

Young people attending Bournemouth and Poole hospitals after experiencing violence or crime will now have access to specialist support, thanks to a new partnership between University Hospitals Dorset, Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner, and the charity No Limits.

The Emergency Department Youth Workers initiative aims to reduce youth violence by offering professional help at a critical time. Two dedicated youth workers will provide emotional support, crisis intervention, and links to ongoing services for patients aged 11 to 25 who attend emergency departments or are admitted as victims of violence or crime.

Funded by the Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner and University Hospital Dorset Charity, the pilot is designed to turn hospital visits into what experts call “reachable teachable” moments — a chance to intervene and guide young people away from further harm.

The youth workers will also support those facing challenges such as substance use, homelessness, self-harm, sexual health issues, and money worries.

David Sidwick, Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner, said early intervention was vital: “An initiative like this shows the power of partnership and provides expert support to vulnerable young people.”

Debbie Anderson, Charity Director at UHD, said the scheme demonstrates how charitable funding can go beyond what the NHS can provide. Consultant Dr Juliet Browning added that having youth workers on site gives young people someone to talk to, helping them leave hospital with stronger support around them.

The pilot will run across Bournemouth and Poole hospitals, with the aim of reducing re-admissions and making Dorset’s young people safer.
