Liberal Democrats conference opens in Bournemouth
The Liberal Democrat Party Conference opened in Bournemouth on Saturday with speeches from Mid Dorset and North Poole MP Vikki Slade and BCP Council leader Councillor Millie Earl.
Vikki Slade spoke about how the party had grown since she first attended conference in 2019 and described her pride in serving both her constituency and in Westminster. She said she felt fortunate to have a team that helps her ensure local residents’ voices are heard.
Councillor Earl then welcomed delegates to Bournemouth, describing it as “a place rich in history, culture and community spirit.” She spoke of her pride in leading a council that she said reflects liberal values and pointed to the party’s local election success last year, when the Liberal Democrats and Independents won the popular vote by more than ten thousand.
She outlined a series of council achievements since the new administration took office, including turning around children’s services, introducing a play strategy, launching a residents’ card, and restoring local democracy.
Councillor Earl closed her speech by saying she was proud to stand against division, hate and the weaponisation of identity, and stressed the importance of liberty, equality and community.
