SEND students prepare for first trip abroad

Students from a specialist college visited Bournemouth Airport to prepare for their first independent flight.

Fifteen students from SWRAC campuses in Boscombe, Winton and Dorchester were given a guided tour of the airport, learning about check in, security checks, departures, baggage collection and Border Control as part of preparations for an overseas visit.

Many of the students have never flown before and the visit was organised to help them understand the airport process and reduce anxiety before travelling abroad on a cultural exchange programme planned for April.

Charlotte Clarke from SWRAC said the visit was helpful for students who may find travelling and busy environments difficult, explaining that the airport’s Special Assistance team guided the group through each stage of the journey.

She said students asked many questions and some worries had been replaced by cautious excitement as they prepared for the upcoming experience.

The students will spend 10 days in Gran Canaria taking part in language learning, cultural visits and practical activities during the exchange programme funded through the government supported Turing Scheme.
