Roundhouse hotel to be empty by October

The Roundhouse Hotel in Bournemouth is expected to stop housing asylum seekers by October 2026.

Bournemouth West MP Jessica Toale said the Home Office had confirmed the date following meetings with ministers and statements in Parliament, where she argued that Bournemouth should be prioritised as hotel use is reduced.

The Roundhouse is one of 3 Bournemouth hotels used for asylum accommodation and has not accepted paying guests during that period, while also becoming the focus of protests and local concerns, particularly during summer.

Ms Toale described the announcement as “positive news for Bournemouth” and said it marked “an important step forward” towards her election pledge that all asylum hotels in Bournemouth West would close.

She said she would work with the community and the building’s landlord to ensure the prominent town centre site is “brought back to life” when its current use ends.

Figures provided in the statement say the number of asylum seekers housed in hotels across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole has fallen by almost 45% in less than a year.

Ms Toale said she would continue working with the Home Office until Bournemouth’s remaining asylum hotels had closed.
