Emission-based parking fees thrown out

Plans to introduce reduced parking fees for lower emission vehicles in Dorset Council car parks have been rejected by councillors, who argued the proposal was unfair and impractical for many residents.

Several councillors raised concerns that the scheme would penalise those unable to afford newer, lower emission vehicles or those without access to charging facilities for electric cars.

The Place and Resources Overview committee voted to remove the idea from the council’s parking review, but the proposal could still proceed if Cabinet decides to overrule the committee’s recommendation.

Some councillors suggested that discounts should instead be targeted at lower-paid town centre workers or low-income families who struggle with parking costs.

The committee supported the idea of lower resident parking fees, although the method for implementing this has not yet been determined, as legal restrictions prevent the use of automatic number plate recognition technology.

Other suggestions included clearer signage in car parks, easier payment options, and the installation of shelter-style parking bays with solar panels.

Dorset Council is reviewing parking across the county, with a focus on addressing congestion in central and coastal locations and improving accessibility for all users.

No final decisions have been made, and further discussions are planned before any changes are introduced.
