New fitness park planned for Southbourne

Residents can view plans for a free outdoor fitness park proposed for Southbourne Overcliff.

The Steve Bernard Foundation is holding a public consultation on Saturday 18 July about the Kevin Mathie Fitness Park, planned beside the children’s play area at Fisherman’s Walk in Southbourne.

The facility would be designed for people of all ages and abilities, offering free exercise equipment intended to support healthier lifestyles and improve physical and mental wellbeing throughout the year.

Visitors will be able to examine the plans, speak with Foundation representatives and share feedback before the project moves forward, while those unable to attend can submit their comments through the consultation webpage.

The park would commemorate Kevin Mathie, a supporter and close friend of the charity, with founder Tony Bernard describing the proposal as “a fitting tribute” to his commitment to community sport.

The Foundation has raised more than £800,000 and supported over 600 sporting projects since 2006, with the Southbourne proposal following the Geva Mentor Fitness Park opened at Toft Steps in 2022.
