Stranded drivers rescued after Storm Chandra

Drivers are being urged to take extra care on roads affected by flooding after a series of rescues across Dorset.

Fire crews attended fifteen incidents between midnight and ten thirty this morning, after drivers became stranded in floodwater following heavy rain linked to Storm Chandra, with the incidents highlighting ongoing risks as unsettled weather continues across the county this winter.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service says surface water can be deeper than it appears, with hidden dips in roads and fast rising levels at fords creating particular dangers for motorists who attempt to drive through affected areas.

Area Manager Ant Bholah said drivers in larger vehicles can also increase risks by travelling too quickly through water, creating a bow wave that may affect other vehicles or nearby properties, adding that people should always drive to the conditions.

The service is reminding motorists to avoid standing water wherever possible, follow road closure signs, use headlights in poor visibility and be aware that roads and pavements may be slippery during wet conditions.

People travelling through flood affected areas are also advised to check routes in advance using local media and allow extra time for diversions where necessary.
