Police patrol heathland during wildfire alert

Police patrols have increased across East Dorset heathland as agencies work to reduce the risk of wildfires.

East Dorset Police officers have joined firefighters, rangers and volunteer groups at local beauty spots following the introduction of a red wildfire alert.

Teams met Forestry England rangers at Ashley Heath and firefighters from Ferndown Fire Station during morning patrols.

Officers later joined volunteers from Wessex Rescue Drones at Upton Heath, where drones have been surveying local heathland since the alert level was raised.

Other organisations involved include Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, the National Trust, Dorset Dogs, K9 Firewise Patrols and Dorset Heaths.

Police said the patrols were intended to protect vulnerable countryside and nearby communities during the period of increased risk.

“We all have a part to play in protecting our countryside,” East Dorset Police said.

Residents and visitors are being asked to follow wildfire safety advice issued by the fire service.
