Lighthouse cinema doubles visitor numbers

Cinema audiences at Lighthouse in Poole have doubled over the past two years.

The arts venue says more people are choosing its mix of mainstream releases alongside British, classic, world and independent films, despite a wider UK trend showing a slight drop in cinema attendance as the sector continues recovering from the pandemic.

Last year, 32,964 people attended screenings at Lighthouse, compared to 16,891 in 2024, while figures also show a 41% rise from 23,272 in 2025, taking totals beyond pre-pandemic levels of 27,198.

Chief Executive Elspeth McBain said the venue has seen “record numbers” and highlighted changes to programming, including a new Family Films season, restored classics and staff-selected screenings designed to broaden appeal.

She added the cinema offers a “personal and warm welcome”, with recent updates including a refurbished bar to encourage visitors to spend more time at the venue before screenings.

Recent films drawing audiences include Hamnet, Downton Abbey The Grand Finale, The Salt Path and The Roses, alongside theatre screenings and themed seasons supported by national partners.

A new Film Pass has also been launched, offering benefits such as free tickets and discounts, as Lighthouse continues to build its audience while national admissions remain below pre-pandemic levels.
