Council warns services face funding pressure

Services across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole could face increased pressure after early analysis suggested the council will receive less funding next year.

The warning follows the government’s announcement of the Provisional Local Government Financial Settlement for twenty twenty five to twenty six, which sets out how much core funding each council is expected to receive, with Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole Council saying the new scheme is likely to leave it worse off over the coming years.

Reacting to the announcement, Council Leader Millie Earl said the authority was shocked and concerned by the figures, warning that reduced funding could lead to cuts or the loss of services relied on by local residents, at a time when councils are already dealing with significant financial strain.

She said councils across England are facing an unprecedented financial crisis, made worse by the current economic climate, adding that the settlement risks limiting support for families, including children needing extra help at school, older residents requiring care at home, and the ability to keep streets clean and safe.

The Leader also highlighted ongoing pressures from the SEND system, saying families are struggling while councils carry growing debt, and warned that a lack of long term clarity brings service cuts closer.

BCP Council says it will continue pressing government for reform of the SEND system and sustainable funding, while raising concerns on behalf of residents affected by the settlement.
