New partnership strengthens Swanage Railway links
A new partnership has been signed between Network Rail’s Wessex Route and the Swanage Railway, marking a major step forward in cooperation between the two organisations.
The signing ceremony and first meeting took place at Corfe Castle on Friday 24 October, setting out a framework for shared support and development.
Under the new agreement, the Swanage Railway will receive redundant railway materials such as rail and sleepers from Network Rail’s Wessex Route. These will be reused on the heritage line, ensuring the safe and sustainable operation of its services for years to come.
Because heritage railways run at lower speeds, the materials can be repurposed effectively, reducing waste and helping to preserve an important part of Dorset’s transport history.
The arrangement also opens the door for practical skills training. Network Rail will use the Swanage Railway’s facilities for coaching employees and apprentices in maintenance, inspection, and fault-finding.
In return, Network Rail staff will be encouraged to volunteer their time and expertise on the heritage line, supporting ongoing maintenance and operations.
Mark Goodall, Network Rail’s Wessex route director, said the partnership sets a strong example of how mainline and heritage railways can work together for mutual benefit.
Swanage Railway Trust trustee Frank Roberts said the signing of the agreement was a milestone, providing “a good foundation on which to build for the future.”
