Dorset Council wins global award for business support system
Dorset Council has received international recognition as a Startup Ecosystem Rising Star 2024 in the Visionary Public Procurement category.
The award, presented by the International Chamber of Commerce and Mind the Bridge, highlights the council’s efforts to support innovation through its Digital Innovation Dynamic Purchasing System (DPS).
Launched in March 2024, the DPS streamlines procurement, making it easier for small businesses to bid for opportunities.
Within a month, 80 companies had signed up.
The system has already been used to secure SME-led solutions for major projects, including the Dorset Open Network Ecosystem (DONE) and the UK’s first WiFi-connected steam train on Swanage Railway.
Richard Biggs, Dorset Council Deputy Leader, emphasized the system’s impact: “The DPS is not only streamlining procurement but also helping us and the UK government address connectivity challenges that hinder rural economic development.”
Funded by the UK Department for Science, Innovation & Technology, the initiative strengthens Dorset’s reputation as a hub for digital innovation, attracting investment and driving economic growth.
