Replica courtroom being developed

Bournemouth University is developing a replica Crown Court after requests from law students for more practical experience in courtroom settings.

The new moot court facility, currently under construction, will include a judges’ bench, witness and jury boxes, and legal counsel desks, offering a realistic environment for mock trials, mooting, debating competitions and skills-based learning for the Solicitor Qualifying Examination.

Students on law and criminology courses will be able to practise presenting arguments, answering judicial questions, examining witnesses and navigating courtroom procedures before starting their careers.

The facility will also be used by students and academics from other disciplines, such as psychology, to study juror decision-making, courtroom behaviour and the experiences of witnesses.

Mel Therese, a law student and Faculty Rep for Business and Law, said she was pleased the university had responded to student feedback and looked forward to using the new facility to develop advocacy skills.

Dr Joel Carlton, Pro Vice Chancellor – Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law, said the facility would help students build confidence and practical skills for their future careers.
