Lidl redevelopment back before planners

Plans to redevelop a Lidl supermarket site in Bournemouth are being recommended for approval.

The proposal for Westover Retail Park will be considered by BCP Council’s eastern planning committee on Thursday after a previous decision was deferred to review concerns around traffic, design and cycling infrastructure.

Lidl first submitted plans in 2023 to build a new supermarket at the site, but the application was refused because it did not provide land for a walking and cycling network.

A revised scheme submitted in April 2025 includes a dedicated cycle route along Castle La

ne West and changes that reduce the size of the store and its car park.

The plans include 75 car parking spaces with 5 disabled bays, 6 parent and child spaces and 2 electric vehicle charging spaces, alongside cycle parking for 29 bikes.

Planning documents state the development would represent a “significant economic investment” and support jobs while improving use of the retail park site.

Planning officers say the Highway Officer is now satisfied with the land being provided for a new cycle lane ahead of the committee decision.
