Student art exhibition opens at Bournemouth venues
An exhibition by Arts University Bournemouth students is now on display at two Bournemouth venues.
Hidden Interventions features site specific artworks created by Fine Art students responding to the collections, history and architecture of the Russell Cotes Art Gallery and Museum and the Bournemouth Natural Science Society.
Students were given the same brief to create work inspired by the spaces and uncover stories within each location, with projects exploring objects and displays found inside the two institutions.
Rachel McRae, lecturer on the BA Hons Fine Art degree at Arts University Bournemouth, said the students were asked to respond to “the histories, collections, and architecture of these two landmark Bournemouth institutions”.
At the Bournemouth Natural Science Society, student Ana Thomas created a piece inspired by Tahemaa, a 2,700 year old Egyptian mummified person which has been in the collection since 1922.
Her artwork, Honouring Tahemaa, explores the colours and textures of the coffin and reflects how the individual has been viewed and treated over time.
Another student, Finn Cook, produced a mixed media film inspired by a taxidermy otter in the collection, using humour to explore modern digital culture and parasocial relationships.
The Hidden Interventions exhibition runs across both venues until 22 March.
