A35 Christchurch Bypass to close for works

Essential resurfacing and maintenance works are set to take place on the A35 Christchurch Bypass and nearby roads, starting at 6pm on 27 October and lasting three weeks.

The scheme includes resurfacing at Stony Lane roundabout, repairs to the River Mude bridge parapet, vegetation clearance, sign renewal, gully cleaning, litter picking and crash barrier repairs. Gas mains works will also be carried out in Stony Lane by Southern Gas Network.

To keep workers and drivers safe, the project will be completed under continuous 24-hour closures, split into two phases. The first runs from 27 October to 10 November, restricting eastbound access to the A35 Christchurch Bypass from Fountain Way. The second runs from 10 to 17 November, restricting westbound access from Somerford roundabout.

Diversion routes have been planned for all vehicles, including HGVs. Eastbound traffic will follow a 30-mile diversion via Totton due to weight restrictions in Lyndhurst, with drivers advised to allow up to one hour extra for journeys. Westbound drivers are warned of delays of up to 45 minutes.

Councillor Andy Hadley, Portfolio Holder for highways maintenance, said the council had worked to minimise disruption: “These improvements are vital to ensure the safety and longevity of our road network, and we appreciate residents’ patience while we carry out this essential work.”

Christchurch Market and bus services will continue to operate as normal on Mondays, with temporary arrangements allowing buses to use the bypass during market hours. Access to local businesses will remain open throughout the works.
