Dorset Council invites views to shape new play strategy

Dorset Council is calling on families, children and young people to help shape a new Play Strategy that will put play at the centre of daily life.

The council says play is essential for children’s health, happiness and development, and wants the strategy to ensure every child has the chance to enjoy safe spaces, welcoming communities and the freedom to be a child.

Residents in Ferndown, Wimborne, Verwood and across Dorset are being asked to share their experiences of play, recreation and free time. This includes what families already enjoy, what they would like to do more often, and what barriers may prevent children from playing.

Councillor Clare Sutton, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Education and Skills, said: “Play is vital for children’s happiness, health, and development. We want every child in Dorset to have the time, space, and opportunities to play.”

The council is working with local communities as part of its Children, Young People and Families Plan. It hopes the new strategy will be shaped by real experiences and feedback from those who know best – the children and families who use the spaces.

Research highlighted by the council shows that outdoor play has declined by 50 per cent in a generation, and this decline has been linked to rising childhood obesity and increased mental health issues.

By investing in play, the council believes it can reduce future costs in health and social care, improve school readiness, and help create stronger and safer communities.

The call for views is open now, and families can contribute by e-mailing play@dorsetcouncil.gov.uk with their ideas and feedback.
