SEND school expansion approved in Bournemouth
Plans have been approved to expand specialist SEND school places at a Bournemouth site.
The former Parkfield School campus is set to become a new satellite site for Linwood School, creating space for up to 216 children and young people to access specialist education within Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.
The development, approved by the Department for Education, is expected to provide specialist places for pupils with additional needs including autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, learning disabilities and social, emotional and mental health needs.
BCP Council will work with Linwood School to prepare the site, with building works expected to include specialist learning areas, therapy and sensory spaces, calm internal layouts and improved acoustic insulation to create suitable learning environments.
Plans also include new access and security measures and adapted outdoor learning and play spaces designed to support a range of learning styles and needs.
Councillor Richard Burton said timely access to specialist support can be “lifechanging for children and young people and for their families” and said the new campus will help more pupils access places locally.
The campus is planned to open in phases, with early estimates suggesting the first phase could begin operating in Autumn 2027.
