Dorset officers receive abuse training

Dorset Police and the office of David Sidwick have funded specialist training aimed at improving the response to honour-based abuse across the county.

The programme was delivered in partnership with Karma Nirvana, a charity specialising in tackling honour-based abuse and forced marriage.

Twenty-three officers and staff took part in the three-day training course, which focused on recognising warning signs, understanding cultural sensitivities and improving support for victims.

The project was supported through a £5,000 funding award, alongside additional funding from the Police and Crime Commissioner’s office.

Honour-based abuse can include harassment, stalking, forced marriage, sexual violence and financial control, and is often considered one of the most under-reported forms of abuse in the UK.

Paul Graham said the training had given officers valuable skills and knowledge to help them investigate cases more effectively and share learning across the force.

Mr Sidwick said the initiative forms part of his Police and Crime Plan and aims to ensure victims feel listened to, protected and supported.
