A rare limited-edition Marmite jar inherited by a Bournemouth man has sold for £550.
The 250g “Newport Rise and React” jar was part of a satirical art collection created by anonymous street artist Rise Propaganda. The piece sold was numbered 150 of 150 in the production run, making it one of the final jars released in the collection.
David Walker, from Bournemouth, inherited the collectable item from his late wife Laura, who was an enthusiastic memorabilia collector and also enjoyed the product itself. Laura died from cancer in 2020, and David decided to sell the jar to a private buyer who wished to remain anonymous.
David said: “Laura loved both her collection and eating the product, but I’m not a fan of the taste.”
He added that he was pleased the jar had gone to “someone who will look after and cherish such a unique piece from her artifacts”.
The Newport Rise and React jars were produced as satirical art pieces linked to Newport’s culture and identity. The rebranded labels referenced local pride while also acting as social commentary through the artist’s work.
The items were released in limited numbers and became sought-after collectables, with some previously appearing on resale websites at higher prices than their original sale value. A jar from the same collection reportedly sold for £160 in 2018.
Rise Propaganda is also known for other Newport-themed artwork, including designs linked to music and local culture.
