Heatherlands Primary School in Poole has been recognised by the Department for Education as a national co-lead for inclusion bases, which are dedicated spaces within mainstream schools for children with special educational needs and disabilities to receive tailored support.
This recognition places Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council at the forefront of national SEND reform, with local approaches now influencing support for children and families across England.
The council has played a key role in enabling this work, including funding The Difference to partner with local schools and promote a shared vision of belonging.
The Department for Education praised Heatherlands Primary School for its inclusive culture, strong use of data and focus on improving outcomes for children, as well as its close collaboration with families and professionals.
As a national co-lead, the school will share its expertise with others, supporting improvements in inclusive practice across the country.
Headteacher Julian Churchill said the school is proud to be chosen and highlighted the importance of making every child feel valued and supported.
This milestone demonstrates how local investment in inclusive practice can drive national change and improve life chances for children.
