SWR: Essential Travel Only Amid Heatwave

SWR: Essential Travel Only Amid Heatwave

South Western Railway is extending its advice for customers in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole to only travel if essential, as the record-breaking heatwave continues to affect services across the South Coast.

The operator will continue running a significantly reduced timetable through Friday, with fewer trains and earlier finishes than usual. Trains that do run are expected to be busier, and journeys may take longer.

Passengers are strongly urged to consider whether their journey is necessary, as further short-notice changes and cancellations are possible due to the extreme heat. Temporary ticket acceptance is in place, allowing customers to travel on alternative days if needed.

Travellers are advised to check journey planners and the South Western Railway website for the latest updates before setting out.

Bringing water and not boarding if feeling unwell is also recommended. Stuart Meek, Chief Operating Officer for South Western Railway and Network Rail Wessex, said the company is working hard to keep essential journeys moving but must run a reduced timetable due to the extreme temperatures.

More information about service changes and ticket acceptance can be found on the South Western Railway website.
