Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council is urging residents and visitors to take extra care along the coastline as thunderstorms are forecast to approach the area.
The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms, which could bring strong winds, lightning, heavy rain, hail and rapidly changing sea conditions.
The warning is in place from 6pm to 11.59pm on Thursday and could affect the BCP coastline and communities. Councillor Millie Earl, Leader of BCP Council, said the fast-developing storms could impact the area and stressed the importance of following safety advice, especially for those entering the water.
Beachgoers are advised not to assume the water is safe, to be ready to leave the water and coastline immediately if conditions change, and to think carefully before swimming or taking part in water sports.
Choosing a lifeguarded beach and swimming between the red and yellow flags is recommended. More information on lifeguarded beaches is available at rnli.org/find-my-nearest/lifeguarded-beaches. Inland, heavy rainfall could lead to surface flooding, affecting driving conditions and some properties. Residents in at-risk areas are encouraged to prepare a flood plan and emergency kit.
Flooding can be reported at propertyflooding.bcpcouncil.gov.uk or bcpcouncil.gov.uk/report. The Severe Weather Emergency Protocol remains in place to support rough sleepers during the hot weather.
