Barnum is on this week at the Bournemouth Pavilion after the town’s historic links with the famous showman.
P.T. Barnum’s Barnum and Bailey Greatest Show on Earth visited Bournemouth in 1898 and 1899, setting up on East Common, now Kings Park, and bringing a large travelling circus operation to the town.
More than 125 years later, Barnum is coming back in a different form, with the stage musical arriving at Bournemouth Pavilion from Tuesday 16 June to Saturday 20 June 2026.
The production stars Lee Mead in the leading role and is directed by Jonathan O’Boyle, with choreography by Oti Mabuse and a cast of more than 20 actor musicians, acrobats and circus acts.
Bournemouth Pavilion’s archive team has been looking back at the town’s connection to Barnum, including material preserved by volunteer Christopher Stone, a lifelong collector of circus memorabilia.
His collection includes original Barnum programmes, brochures and items from the 1898 tour, representing the kind of material audiences in Bournemouth may have seen at the time.
The original circus operation involved around 960 performers and workers, 460 horses, 20 elephants and more than 100 wagons and vehicles, moving between towns with 4 trainloads of equipment.
A procession through Bournemouth left at 9am and passed along Holdenhurst Road, Christchurch Road, Lansdowne and the Town Square, taking 20 minutes to pass any single point.
Archive photographs include elephants walking along Christchurch Road in Boscombe, showing how the travelling spectacle once moved through local streets.
Steve Turner, Director of Venues on behalf of BH Live, said it was “wonderful” to share the story with audiences, adding that Barnum’s return feels “incredibly special”.
The Pavilion archive team is also asking residents and visitors to look for memorabilia linked to the venue, as it builds a fuller record ahead of the theatre’s centenary in 2029.
