Boscombe course supports sight loss cooks

People with visual impairments have been supported to cook healthy meals at sessions in Boscombe.

Members of Dorset Blind Association took part in 4 weekly sessions at Boscombe Baptist Church, where Dorset Friendly Food Club tutors helped them prepare and cook simple, wholesome dishes from scratch in a supported setting.

Eileen Bultz, 93, who has glaucoma and lives alone, said cooking with sight loss can be difficult and sometimes dangerous, adding that the sessions helped her feel “supported” while cooking with others facing similar challenges.

Sandy Woosnam said the course had come at the right time as she needs to be more careful about what she eats, while Davie Morrison said the accessible recipe cards and bright location made cooking easier.

Kathy Smith said she had lost confidence when her sight deteriorated and had started eating more ready prepared meals, but the course had “awakened” her interest in cooking again and provided social contact.

Grainne Curry, from Dorset Blind Association, said sight impairment can be isolating, and the sessions had helped people regain confidence. Friendly Food Club Lead Tutor Andria Glasgow said large print cards, talking scales and coloured cutting boards can make cooking more accessible.
