BCP Council says it is working to improve the reliability of its weekly food waste collection service.
The service was rolled out to more than 100,000 households across Poole and Bournemouth in April.
The council says take-up has been higher than expected, with 601 tonnes of food waste collected across BCP in May.
That was almost 250 tonnes more than in May last year.
Councillor Andy Hadley said the strong response shows residents are keen to reduce food waste going into general rubbish.
The council has apologised for delays in some areas and says it is adding an extra vehicle, increasing staffing, adjusting routes and changing where lorries are emptied to improve collections.
