Councillor says BCP unprepared for visitors

Labour group leader Patrick Canavan has criticised BCP Council following a busy bank holiday weekend that saw record temperatures and thousands of visitors head to the area.

More than 83 tonnes of rubbish were collected, almost 2,900 parking fines were issued and 64 lost children or vulnerable adults were reunited with their families.

Councillor Canavan said the council should take a more proactive approach to managing peak visitor periods, suggesting measures such as a temporary park and ride scheme.

He also raised concerns about anti-social behaviour following disorder on Bournemouth beach on 26 May and questioned whether enough preventative measures were in place.

Council leader Millie Earl rejected claims the authority was unprepared, saying staff worked around the clock alongside partner agencies to keep people safe, manage crowds and maintain services.

She said nearly 3,000 parking fines were issued and seven vehicles removed over the weekend, adding that the council continues to call on the Government for stronger enforcement powers and the ability to introduce a visitor levy.
