Upton Country Park celebrates 50th anniversary

Upton Country Park is celebrating 50 years since officially opening to visitors in May 1976.

The anniversary will be marked with a two-day “Upton Through the Ages” event on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 May, featuring entertainment, themed activities and displays celebrating the estate’s history.

Visitors will be able to experience a Regency-inspired atmosphere around Upton House with period dancers, costumes and traditional garden games, while the Walled Garden will host 1970s-themed activities including music, inflatables, stalls and a fancy dress competition.

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council says the event is free to attend, although normal parking charges will apply.

Rich Herrett said the anniversary is a chance for residents and visitors to celebrate one of the area’s best-loved green spaces.

The estate was gifted to Poole Corporation by the Llewellin family in 1957 and now attracts around one million visitors each year.

Today, the park includes woodland, gardens, meadows and facilities including tea rooms, galleries, a play area and event spaces, supported by nearly 200 volunteers.
