BU students visit AFCB training base

Bournemouth University students have visited AFC Bournemouth’s elite training base to gain industry experience.

Master’s students studying sports performance, strength and conditioning, and exercise science were given access to the club’s Canford Magna performance centre on 24 April, where they explored facilities used by both men’s and women’s teams.

The site includes an indoor dome pitch, outdoor training areas, medical suites, classrooms and changing facilities, all designed to support training, recovery, analysis and development at Premier League level.

Student Jean Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai said opportunities like this are “incredibly important”, adding they help build connections and offer insight into how the industry works in a real environment.

Flynn Healey said maintaining links with elite clubs allows students to contribute research while gaining experience and potential career pathways.

Dr Andrew Callaway said taking students into a professional football environment helps “bridge the gap between academic rigour and professional reality” in ways that cannot be replicated in a classroom.

The visit was hosted by Steve Fletcher, who said it is always a pleasure to welcome students and give them a closer look at how the club operates behind the scenes.

Students also met first team players and had the chance to ask questions, adding further insight into life inside a professional football club.
