Concerns remain over digital savings plan

Concerns remain over digital savings plan

A report due to be discussed by councillors on April 21 highlights that the overall risk of the programme remains high.

The authority has already committed around £12.4 million to digital transformation projects, with a further £2.34 million set to be considered.

The plans include introducing new systems, automation and artificial intelligence to improve services and reduce costs.

However, the report warns there are risks around delays in implementing technology, failing to achieve planned savings and resistance from staff adapting to new ways of working.

It also acknowledges that some services may not run as smoothly during the transition.

Some of the changes will affect how the public interacts with the council, including increased use of automated systems to handle enquiries.

Other investment is focused on internal systems such as human resources, payroll and finance, many of which are currently outdated.

The council says safeguards are in place to keep the programme on track and ensure services remain accessible and inclusive.

Councillors are expected to review the plans and associated risks at a cabinet meeting later this month.
