Poole hospice recognised for environmental work

Forest Holme Hospice in Poole has been recognised for its environmental commitment.

The hospice has received the Greener Palliative Care Silver Award, the highest accolade in the programme’s first round of awards.

The scheme, developed by the Palliative Care Sustainability Network, highlights organisations reducing their environmental impact while maintaining high standards of care.

Forest Holme is currently the only organisation to achieve Silver status.

The award was presented at the Palliative Care Congress in Brighton.

The hospice has introduced a number of initiatives through its staff-led Green Group.

These include reducing unnecessary glove use, installing automatic lighting to cut energy consumption and introducing running vests made from recycled materials.

The organisation is also contributing to research looking at whether some medical tests at the end of life could be reduced, helping both patient care and environmental impact.

A spokesperson said the hospice is proud of the recognition and is committed to continuing its sustainability efforts.

Further work is planned to reduce waste, improve energy efficiency and review clinical practices.
