Pothole reports across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole have increased significantly compared to last year.
More than 5,300 potholes were reported to BCP Council in January and February 2026.
That compares to just over 1,000 reports during the same period in 2025.
The figures represent a rise of nearly 400 per cent.
Reports show 2,612 potholes were recorded in January this year and 2,717 in February.
Experts say potholes are often caused by a freeze-thaw process, where water enters cracks in the road, freezes and expands, creating damage that worsens with traffic.
Motorists are being warned that hitting potholes can damage tyres and wheels and could have longer-term safety consequences.
BCP Council says the increase in reports is linked to prolonged wet weather, including storms earlier this year.
A spokesperson said urgent defects are prioritised, with other repairs scheduled as part of wider maintenance work.
Residents are being encouraged to report potholes through the council’s website so repairs can be carried out.
