Bournemouth denied win over Man United after controversial penalty decisions

Two controversial penalty calls have denied the Cherries a league double over Manchester United with the tight game ending 2-2.

Bournemouth started the brighter and put the inconsistent United side under increasing pressure and opened the scoring when a Marcos Senesi pass set up Dominic Solanke to fire with power into Andre Onana’s bottom corner.

Dango Ouattara and Luis Sinisterra both came close to doubling the home side’s lead with their shots trickling just shy of the United far post.

Then, against the run of play, Bruno Fernandes leveled for the away team after firing the ball into the roof of Neto’s goal.

However, Bournemouth responded well when another stellar pass from Senesi found Justin Kluivert who netted his second goal in three games to restore the lead for Iraola’s men.

Both sides ended the half hitting the crossbar with Milos Kerkez heading his golden chance onto the woodwork before Bruno Fernandes hit the top of Neto’s goal from a long-range curler.

The second half was filled with controversy when a deflected Kobbie Mainoo shot ricocheted off the arm of Adam Smith giving United a chance to equalise from the spot, which Bruno took to level.

Cherries fans thought they had the chance to win it in added time when youngster Willy Kambwala chopped down Ryan Christie on the edge of the box to win a penalty but VAR later deemed the contact outside the area and a free kick was taken and fired into the wall.

Iraola’s men will feel the more frustrated having been the better side for large parts of the game but will relish in the four points they have taken from Man United this season.

Bournemouth turn their attention to Aston Villa away next Sunday as they wish to shorten their injury list after adding Luis Sinisterra to it in the first half.
