No contractor found for Bournemouth Pier repairs

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council is reconsidering its plans for Bournemouth Pier repairs after failing to secure a contractor due to the scale and cost of the project.

The council had allocated £9.6 million from government funding to restore the pier and extend its lifespan by 25 years. Initial plans aimed for work to begin in late 2025 or early 2026, but the timeline has shifted, with the council now expecting completion by early 2028.

Councillor Millie Earl, Leader of BCP Council, said the tender process did not attract a suitable bid, but it provided valuable insight into the scale and cost of the work required.

She explained that rising construction costs mean the council must ensure any new proposals are affordable and deliverable. In the meantime, the council is prioritising the removal of deteriorating timber landing stages, which pose a safety risk.

This work is expected to take place in the autumn, and visitors are urged to follow warning signs and avoid the landing stages.

Details of the revised repair approach have not yet been confirmed.
