Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is warning residents in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole about the risk of wildfires due to ongoing hot and dry weather.
The service has dealt with several large fires affecting fields and heathland since Wednesday, which have been challenging to control and damaging to local wildlife and the environment. Group Manager Matthew Skyme urged people to take extra care, especially during the current heatwave.
He said it is important for everyone to consider the impact of their actions, particularly when enjoying the outdoors with friends and family. The fire service is advising against having barbecues, campfires or bonfires, especially on heathland, open spaces or beaches, as these can easily spark fires.
People are also reminded to dispose of smoking materials properly and not to set off flares or light barbecues at the beach. Farmers and agricultural workers are being asked to take extra precautions, such as regularly cleaning machinery and ensuring fire extinguishers are accessible.
The fire service attended four significant field fires in one day this week, highlighting the increased risk during harvest and hot weather. Anyone who sees a fire or suspicious activity should call 999 immediately.
