BCP misses out on Town of Culture shortlist

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole’s bid to be UK Town of Culture 2028 has been rejected.

But BCP Council says the bid has strengthened relationships between artists, organisations, community groups and local partners, while highlighting the area’s cultural diversity.

The national competition will award the successful town £3 million to deliver a year long programme in 2028, but BCP will not progress to the next stage.

Councillor Andy Martin said it was “disappointing” not to be shortlisted, but added the proposal had brought together partners from across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole to tell “a powerful story” about the area’s shared cultural identity.

He said the council would continue supporting local artists, creating opportunities for residents and keeping culture at the heart of the area.

Helen Keall, Chair of the Cultural Compact, said the commitment to bringing the 3 towns together through culture remained “undimmed”, while BEAF Director Carol Maund described the bid process as “a very useful process” that could help shape future cultural programmes.

The council says it will continue working with partners on new cultural initiatives benefiting residents, communities and local businesses.
