SEND services across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole have reached a new stage of government oversight.
The Education Secretary has recognised progress in support for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities, with the government stepping down its statutory direction and moving the BCP Local Area Partnership to an Improvement Notice.
In a letter to BCP Council and NHS leaders, Bridget Phillipson said the decision reflected the “hard work” undertaken to improve SEND services across the area.
The letter highlights stronger partnership working, more responsive health support, greater co-production with young people and families, and improved outcomes for children and young people.
It also says more children with SEND are having their needs met in mainstream schools, with 276 additional SEND-suitable places created over the past 2 years.
Councillor Richard Burton said it was “an important moment” and reflected “real progress” in improving experiences for children and young people.
Further progress is still required, with government approval needed for the Local SEND Reform Plan this autumn. If approved, it could unlock extra support to help address SEND funding pressures.
