Vehicle toll payments on the Sandbanks Ferry are now fully online following the removal of the toll booths.
Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras will record vehicle and motorcycle crossings at Shell Bay, removing barriers, paper tickets and card payments at the toll point for drivers using the ferry between Sandbanks and Studland.
Motorists will be able to pay online before travelling, up to 30 days in advance, or by midnight on the day after their crossing, with the ferry saying the cost of each journey will remain unchanged.
An app for Google phones is available now, but the iOS app for Apple devices has yet to appear.
Regular users can set up an account and pre-load it with tokens, allowing payment to be taken automatically each time their registered vehicle crosses, while advance return tokens will remain valid for 30 days.
The ferry says removing the toll booth should reduce queues on the Studland side during busy periods, making crossings “quicker and smoother” for passengers.
The cameras operate in all weather conditions, and around the clock. Any number plate that cannot be read automatically is reviewed by a member of the team to ensure accuracy.
Paper tickets can be exchanged for tokens until 31 March 2027. Pedestrians and cyclists are not affected.
