Dorset £1m fund supports mental health groups

A second £1 million fund will support Dorset groups helping people improve mental health locally.

Dorset Community Foundation is working with NHS Dorset and Community Action Network to distribute grants for non-clinical projects that improve wellbeing, build resilience and help people living with mental health conditions take part in activities supporting recovery.

The funding follows an earlier £1 million programme, which supported 53 Dorset groups over 2 years and benefitted more than 6,500 people through projects including outdoor activities, drop-ins, music, crafts, advice services, community meals and coffee mornings.

Around two-thirds of the latest funding will go to projects previously supported by the scheme, while more than £300,000 will be available for new applications when the grants programme opens on June 29.

Two-year grants of up to £20,000 and one-year grants of up to £5,000 are available for community groups and charities delivering activities which could reduce demand for NHS appointments or clinical interventions.

Ellie Maguire, Dorset Community Foundation’s Grants Manager, said the commitment was “fantastic news for the voluntary sector” and for people experiencing difficulties with their wellbeing and mental health.

Earlier projects included music support sessions for new parents and carers in Bridport, sea swimming courses at Avon Beach, Branksome Chine and Weymouth Beach, and craft and nature activities for people on Portland.

Mark Smith, Lead Commissioner for All Age Mental Health at NHS Dorset, said social inclusion and meaningful activity were important in people’s recovery from mental health challenges.

Applications are open until midday on August 6 and you can apply here.
