BU joins drive to improve maternity care

Bournemouth University is joining a national project focused on reducing inequalities in maternity care.

The National Institute for Health and Care Research has committed £50 million over five years to the Maternity Disparities Consortium, which will bring universities, health services, community groups and voluntary organisations together to address gaps in care.

The consortium is being led by the University of Birmingham and the University of Newcastle, with BU contributing to research, digital development and work aimed at helping more communities and clinical staff take part.

Professor Huseyin Dogan and Dr Deniz Cetinkaya will jointly lead research into digital and AI technology that could improve access to maternity information and support, including translation and interpretation tools.

Their work will also consider early identification of cardiometabolic risks, remote blood pressure monitoring, screening and personalised support based on a woman’s needs, circumstances and cultural preferences.

BU has received £217,000 for this work, including funding to recruit two research assistants.

Professor Dogan said AI could help clinicians make decisions and support “healthier pregnancies” while ensuring care better reflects personal needs.

Professor Vanora Hundley will become Deputy Capacity Lead for the consortium, helping manage £10 million intended to build research skills among underserved groups, including midwives, neonatal nurses and health visitors.

She said there were still disparities affecting women from ethnic minorities, disabled women and women living in areas of deprivation.
