Concern over lollipop patrol changes

BCP Council is considering replacing some school crossing patrols with permanent zebra or button-controlled crossings.

The proposals follow a 2023 consultation, where 73 per cent of respondents supported a move to permanent crossing facilities.

A School Crossing Group has raised concerns, saying lollipop staff do more than help children cross the road and cannot simply be replaced by road markings.

Councillor Richard Herrett said no decisions have been made on individual patrol officers and any changes would follow site assessments and safety checks.

He said permanent crossings could improve safety throughout the day and year, rather than only during school-run times.

Bournemouth East MP Tom Hayes has launched a public survey, saying patrol officers provide a trusted human presence for children and families.
