AUB film school celebrates award sweep

Film students in Bournemouth have won national awards across commercial and environmental filmmaking competitions.

Arts University Bournemouth’s Bournemouth Film School took the overall prize at the Kodak Student Commercial Awards in central London on 29 May, while also placing in every award category at the Regent Street Cinema event.

The competition asked student production groups to make a 30 second commercial or Public Service Announcement using a single 400 foot roll of 16mm celluloid film, giving them 11 minutes of raw footage to work with.

Barry Gross, Cinematography Lecturer for BA Film Production, said working with celluloid needs “discipline, precision, and collaborative trust”, and said it was “extraordinary” to see students succeed across the national field.

The school’s success continued at A Few Minutes For The Planet at Soho’s Garden Cinema, where Fairytales of the Future won the Excellence in Fiction category at the Green Film School Alliance awards.

The film was made by third year BA Film students working with students from AUB’s Make-up and Costume degree programmes, under eco-friendly production rules and with a story focused on the climate crisis.

Clare Cahill, Senior Lecturer for BA Film Production, said the winning film was sustainable “in its practical production” and “in its core message”.

Fairytales of the Future will now be shown in UK Green Film Network cinemas nationwide. The team includes director Caitlin Brook, creative director Ben Saggs, and producers Olivia Bailey and Bay Whittingham.
